phillies look hungry entering september

Yodo | Comments (0) | Phillies | September 1, 2010 1:15 pm

The Phillies enter September three games back of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East and 1.5 games in front of the San Francisco Giants (with a game in hand) as they look to make the playoffs for a fourth straight season. The Phils will be leaning heavily on Ryan Howard, who FINALLY hit his first HR since July 27 last night. They are 4-1 on their current road trip after getting swept by the Houston Astros and will need to carry that momentum into a September that is filled with divisional matchups. (more…)

at least something positive happened last night

Mo'lloy | Comments (0) | Phillies | August 11, 2010 8:51 am

Nothing went well last night, as the Phils fell 15-9 against the Dodgers. No one pitched well, as even the “ever-reliable” Cy Kendrick gave up 5 earned in 3 1/3 innings and the bullpen didn’t fair much better. At least we got to see the above – our hero, Dom Brown’s first career home run – a line smash to right center off of Ronald Belasario. Here’s to hoping we see many more of those in the future. It may get a little harder to see Dom Bombs in the near future as Shane Victorino began his rehab stint in Lehigh Valley last night, going 1-2. While Dom will likely remain with the big league squad, he’s probably just going to be a bat of the bench/spot starter for the stretch run when Victorino returns to the everyday line up. A nation weeps.

phillies making moves, 2 back in the nl east

Yodo | Comments (0) | Phillies | August 9, 2010 12:06 pm

The Phillies returned home and took 2 of 3 from the Mets and moved within 2 games of the Braves for first place in the NL East. They also moved to just a half game back of the Giants with a game in hand for the wild card lead. This is the time for the Phillies to make a run. They play 13 of their next 16 games at home with only a brief trip to Citi Field breaking up series against the Dodgers, Giants (the return of the BAT!), Nationals and Astros before heading west for the final time this season.

Here are the projected matchups for the next 9 games pending rainouts/injuries:
LAD series: Padilla/Kendrick, Billingsly/Oswalt, Kershaw/Blanton
@NYM series: Dickey/Hamels, Niese/Halladay, Pelfrey/Kendrick
SF series: Zito/Oswalt, Cain/Blanton, Sanchez/Hamels

The Phillies face some decent pitching against LA but miss Santana and Lincecum in the next two series. The Giants series begins a run of 24 games in 23 days including a 7 day trip out west to face the Padres, Dodgers and a make up game against the Rockies.

INJURY UPDATE: Shane Victorino looks to return from the DL Friday and it remains to be seen what the team will do with Domonic Brown. If he does get sent down, it will only be for about 2 weeks as he will be back up come September 1. It’s probably the best move to send him down so he can play every day and then hopefully he will come back up fresh when rosters expand.

Ryan Howard still has swelling in his ankle, but the Beast should be back later this month as well. Howard is aiming to come off the DL on August 17 when he is eligible but he has yet to do any baseball related activities so it’s uncertain as to how close he actually is to returning.

Chase Utley told the Daily News on Sunday that he has bulked up during his time off and estimates he has added 4 pounds of muscle despite missing the last 6 weeks of baseball. He remains on track for a late August or early September return and should give a nice pop to a lineup that has featured Wilson Valdez for most of the season.

roy oswalt waives no trade clause, dealt to phillies

Yodo | Comments (2) | Phillies | July 29, 2010 3:06 pm

For the fourth July in a row, the Phillies have traded for a starting pitcher at the non-waiver trade deadline. In 2007 it was Kyle Lohse, in 2008 it was Joe Blanton, in 2009 it was Cliff Lee and now in 2010 it is Roy Oswalt. The Phillies acquired Houston’s ace for a package that includes J.A. Happ and prospects Anthony Gose (CF) and Jonathan Villar (SS). Houston is also picking up $11M of the remaining $24M guaranteed on Oswalt’s deal (~$5M this year, $16M in 2011 and $3M buyout of 2012, or $16M if the Phillies pick up his option). More after the jump. (more…)

fun with charts!

Mo'lloy | Comments (0) | Phillies | July 23, 2010 12:52 pm

I figured with all the Werth-bashing out there, it might make sense to take a look at Werth’s offensive production (blue line) relative to the Phillies’ winning percentage (yellow line). I also threw Victorino (pink line) into the mix, because, well, he’s been terrible too. What you see in front of you is a game-by-game measure of each players’ OPS compared to the Philllies’ overall winning percentage. There’s really no ultimate conclusion to draw here, as running calculating a correlation coefficient for Werth or Victorino relative to the Phillies winning percentage (-.305 & -.623, respectively) don’t really indicate a trend either way. It is interesting to note, however, that winning percentage reached its highest level around the same time Victorino and Werth’s OPS reached their respective peaks. Also, despite the apparent lack of correlation (as calculated) between Werth’s production and the Phillies’ winning percentage, they conspicuously share a very similar shape.

today in scapegoating – phils fire milt thompson

Mo'lloy | Comments (0) | Phillies | July 22, 2010 11:26 pm

Good Bye, Milt! Per multiple sources, Phillies’ hitting coach, Milt Thompson has been given the axe by Ruben Amaro Jr. Thompson will be replaced by Lehigh Valley skipper Greg Gross. While I’m all for a shake up, I’m pretty convinced that replacing Milt will do absolutely nothing. Thompson is not the one responsible for all the injuries on this team, he’s not responsible for signing a 37 year-old left fielder to a prohibitive contract, nor is he responsible for assembling a bench completely incapable of getting a pinch hit. Too often in sports, it’s easy to remove the guy whose making the least amount of money and pretend like it’s a major move. It takes real balls to make a major move, like sitting Raul in favor of Dom Brown or firing Ruben Amaro. The Phils followed up the move by recalling Kyle Kendrick to pitch this Saturday – let me get this straight, he wasn’t good enough to be on the big league squad on Tuesday but he’s good enough now? Congratulations, Phillies, you are officially the most gutless team in Philadelphia.

bobby abreu > jayson werth?

Mo'lloy | Comments (11) | Phillies | July 19, 2010 9:54 am

Remember a little ways back when Philadelphia fans were so intent on running Bobby Abreu out of town because of his nonchalant attitude toward fielding and inability to “come through in the clutch”? I pose the following question now: if we were so interested (as fans) in getting rid of Bobby Abreu, why are we so eager to re-sign Jayson Werth? Some numbers after the jump.

a look back at the phillies’ first half

Yodo | Comments (0) | Phillies | July 12, 2010 3:15 pm

After all of the injuries, inconsistency and, of course, the good times, the Phillies finished the first half with a 4-game win streak over the NL Central-leading Reds and head in to the All-Star break at 47-40. It’s been a tough season for Phillies fans but there are reasons to be optimistic in the second half. Ryan Madson and Carlos Ruiz finally rejoined the team last week and it appears Placido Polanco and Chad Durbin are set to return right after the break. Chase Utley said he expects to be back sooner than anticipated but his timetable is still late August/early September.

The Phillies reached the All-Star break 4.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves and a half game back of the New York Mets in the NL East. In 2007 they were 44-44, 2008 they were 52-44 and last year they were 48-38 at the break. After the jump we take a look at the positives and negatives from the first half and what to expect from this team in the second half. (more…)
