Get excited for a great week in sports

Kizzle | Comments (1) | Eagles, Penn State, Phillies | September 7, 2010 12:15 pm

There are some weeks in sports that just really get you going, and this is one of them. For starters NFL football is back. America’s favorite sport is returning and for the first time in years, there is a new quarterback under center. The college game-of-the-week involves none other than the Nittany Lions. And the Phils continue their quest for a 4th straight divisional title versus their most detested rival. A more in-depth look at this week after the jump.  (more…)

phillies look hungry entering september

Yodo | Comments (0) | Phillies | September 1, 2010 1:15 pm

The Phillies enter September three games back of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East and 1.5 games in front of the San Francisco Giants (with a game in hand) as they look to make the playoffs for a fourth straight season. The Phils will be leaning heavily on Ryan Howard, who FINALLY hit his first HR since July 27 last night. They are 4-1 on their current road trip after getting swept by the Houston Astros and will need to carry that momentum into a September that is filled with divisional matchups. (more…)

Best players in Philly history by number: 0-49

Kizzle | Comments (1) | Eagles, Flyers, Phillies, Sixers | August 30, 2010 8:52 am

Piggybacking off of SI.com from last week, we are going to select the best players, by number, ever to suit up for a Philadelphia team. It’s simple: who is the best player to wear a #1 jersey in Philadelphia sports history? Who’s #2?… and so on. Today, we’ll rank #0 through #49. This shit takes a while, so who we’ll do #50-99 next week. P.S. – Asante doesn’t own #22 just yet. All numbers after the jump. (more…)

roy halladay is awesome

Yodo | Comments (0) | Phillies | August 25, 2010 10:36 am

As Scott Barry continues to be the human punching bag today for his idiotic decision in last night’s game, Roy Halladay flew under the radar with an amazing gesture. Matt Gelb reports that Doc gave out 60 Baume & Mercier watches personally engraved to everyone in the clubhouse (including the bat boy) to commemorate the perfect game he threw on May 29 in Florida:

“The watches were enclosed in brown boxes with an inscription on the front: “We did it together. Thanks, Roy Halladay.”

Each watch was engraved on the back with the date of the game and the linescore. Every watch was personalized, the person’s name engraved on the back of their watch.”

Personally, I feel like I should get a watch out of this since I celebrated his accomplishment by buying a ticket to a game that already happened.

Doc looks to get the Phillies back on the right track tonight against J.A. Happ in his return to Philadelphia. Be sure to hit up our store for your Roy Halladay gear.

H/T to @kramtsew, even though he’s an Iowa fan.

eff this game.

Weems | Comments (0) | Phillies | August 25, 2010 12:29 am

This umpire (Scott Barry) is completely out of pocket. Not only did Howard get called out on a check swing in the 14th with 2 men on, but this douchebag tossed him (and Ross Gload!!! He’s on the DL!!!!) with no position players left in the Phillies dugout. So, this happened:

Roy Oswalt admirably came to the rescue to play left field and actually looked pretty good. He made the first out on a fly ball after entering the game. Problem was though, he also had to bat… He ended the game on a strike out in the 16th inning. Astros won 4-2. Bottom line: both teams sucked. Not shocking to learn that Barry was a minor league replacement. Amateur asshole trying to make a name for himself.

breaking news: worst trade ever gets more worse (UPDATE)

Mo'lloy | Comments (0) | Phillies | August 20, 2010 12:49 pm

Tyson Gillies, one-third of the poo poo platter received this off-season was arrested in Florida and charged with cocaine possession, per Paul Hagen. Following the demotion of Aumont to single-A in June, this trade could have potentially been RAJ’s Waterloo if not for the acquisition of Roy Oswalt. Gillies’ major selling point was his speed, but apparently he still wasn’t fast enough to out run the police. (more…)

welcome home?

Kizzle | Comments (0) | Phillies | August 17, 2010 7:24 pm

Pat the Bat obviously didn’t see our tribute posted earlier today because he entered the batter’s box angry. He took a bad Roy Oswalt change-up and deposited it in the left field seats for a solo shot. Revenge?

Ben Francisco for Pat Burrell? OK? Done. No trade-backs.

pat the bat returns tonight: the man, the myth, the legend

Yodo | Comments (1) | Phillies | August 17, 2010 12:57 pm

Certified lady killer Pat Burrell returns to Philadelphia tonight for the first time since April 2009. Last April, he showed up as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays for the on deck series on April 3 and 4. On the 3rd he was honored with a tribute video and on the 4th he batted leadoff for the Rays and took Cole Hamels yard on the first pitch and was then pulled from the game. He was also able to attend the ring ceremony on April 8 to pick up his World Series ring with his former teammates. I attended all of these games and hope to be in attendance tonight as Burrell makes his return.

He comes back this time playing for a Giants team that is tied with the Phillies for the Wild Card heading into tonight’s game. I expect Pat to get a standing ovation in his first at bat as well as a nice reception from the fans in LF when he returns to his old stomping ground.

After the jump, we’ll take a look back and some of our favorite [alledged] stories and photos that have made Pat the Bat a true American hero. (more…)

the comeback kids!

Weems | Comments (0) | Phillies | August 13, 2010 10:17 am

Chooch is so awesome. He sucks against shitty teams and lives for the pressure situations. He’ll never go down as an all-time great, and as long as Yadier Molina is in the NL, he may never make an All-Star team, but Phillie fans will never forget the guy because of moments like these. It’s time to ride the Chooch train to the playoffs! 2 back in the NL East, 1 back in the Wild Card race…

Thanks to reader, Jimmy, for the video. Franzke’s call here. Danny Martinez’s call in Spanish here.
